Trader’s Notebook: S&P 500

9:35 a.m. New York time

What’s happening now? The S&P 500 E-mini futures continued to fall for a second day in a row, reaching an overnight high of 7779.25 less than an hour after yesterday’s session ended, and then falling, so far to a low of 7707.25.

What does it mean? Elliott Wave Theory continues to see rising wave D{-5} as being underway. Wave D{-5} is the fourth of five waves that will complete the expanding triangle, wave 4{-4}, a downward correction that began on October 29, 2025.

Internally, wave D{-5} is in its third and final subwave, rising wave C{-6}.

The price remains well above the rising upper boundary of the triangle, presently in the 7410s. When the price falls below that boundary, it will be a strong sign that wave D{-5} has ended and falling wave E{-5} is underway. Wave E{-5}, the final subwave, would normally be expected to fall toward the lower boundary of the triangle, presently around 6120 and falling further every moment.

Decision Points. The two-day decline has not yet provided sufficient evidence that wave D{-5} has ended. A fall below the triangle’s upper boundary would provide strong evidence that wave E{-5} has begun. Until then, the D{-5}/C{-6} labels remain in place. A rise above the September high of 7848.50 would reinforce the view that rising wave C{-6} remains underway.

Waves Now Underway

These are the waves currently in progress under my principal analysis. Each line on the list shows the wave number, with the subscript in curly brackets, the traditional degree name, the starting date, the starting price of the S&P 500 E-mini futures, and the direction of the wave.

Reading the chart. Price movements — waves – – in Elliott Wave Theory analysis are labeled with numbers within trending waves and letters with corrective waves. The subscripts — numbers in curly brackets — designate the wave’s degree, which, in Elliott Wave analysis, means the relative position of a wave within the larger and smaller structures that make up the chart.R.N. Elliott, who in the 1930s developed the form of analysis that bears his name, viewed the chart as a complex structure of smaller waves nested within larger waves, which in turn are nested within still larger waves. In mathematics it’s called a fractal structure, where at every scale the pattern is similar to the others.

Learning and other resources. Elliott Wave analysis provides context, not prophecy. As the 20th century semanticist Alfred Korzybski put it in his book Science and Sanity(1933), “The map is not the territory… The only usefulness of a map depends on similarity of structure between the empirical world and the map.” And I would add, in the ever-changing markets, we can judge that similarity of structure only after the fact.
